Not Perfect, But Different – Matthew 5:38-48

This was the final Sunday of four we’ve spent hearing Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5.  This week we come to the strange commands to turn the other cheek, go the second mile, and love our enemies.  To pretend such a Way is easy does not help us.  But despite the words, “be perfect,” Jesus is not requiring flawlessness from his followers.  He is asking for a full commitment to the radical values of the Kingdom.  To follow Jesus is not so much to be perfect as it is to be different.
